The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for all of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass., as heavy rains moved in to the region.

The watch was in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Forecasters said the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea, the first of the year, would bring heavy rainfall to southern New England. The heaviest rains were expected Friday afternoon into Friday night. Two to 3 inches of rain are expected, though some spots could get 4 inches.

The weather service said the heavy rainfall could bring some flooding, including in urban areas, areas with poor drainage or along small rivers and streams.

The weather service said the Pawtuxet River was expected to crest at 9.4 feet by Saturday morning. Flood stage is 9 feet. Minor flooding is expected. The river should fall below flood stage by early Saturday afternoon.

Local communities are asking residents for help in mitigating the effects of flooding.

Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan asked people to help keep the areas around the city's 6,000 storm drains clear so that rain water can flow freely through them.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung pinpointed a few neighborhoods, including Perkins Street, where flooding has been a major issue in the past.

Fung told NBC 10 that he has secured federal funds and will be buying up property on Perkins and other streets to try return parts of the neighborhoods to their natural state so that water will flow more.

A Cumberland company has come up with a product that can help protect property from flooding. It's called a Quick Dam, and it acts as a sandless sandbag.

The product consists of a bag with a chemical mixture inside that, when water touches it, activates a reaction that inflates the bag to a size exceeding 30 pounds. It can be used just like a sandbag to divert water from a home.
