Cardi's Furniture holds drive to help victims in Oklahoma

Posted: Updated:

Cardi's Furniture stores acted as drop off locations Sunday for those who wanted to donate to the victims of the Oklahoma Tornado.

NBC 10 caught up with Southern New Englanders who wanted to make a difference at the West Warwick store.

"Sad thing that happened and you want to help in some way. I felt this is a way I could help and I was glad something was done locally," said Roxanne Arakelian of West Warwick.

The images of the devastation in Oklahoma seen on television prompted many to show up to the donation drive.

"We're celebrating today with a party, so I had to do something. The pictures were devastating, so it was the right thing to do today," said Bill Emby of Cranston.

The Cardi's drive was collecting specific items as requested by the Red Cross in Oklahoma: diapers, wipes, paper towels and bottled water.

Cardi's is teaming up with Arpin Van Lines to transport the donations, which should arrive in Oklahoma by the end of the week.

"When tragedy happens, we don't want them to happen anymore, but when they do, we put a program together and get the job done," said Ron Cardi of Cardi's Furniture.

In addition to collecting necessities, volunteers from the Red Cross collected monetary donations as well Sunday.

The tragedy seems to have struck a chord with most people here in Southern New England, including Cranston grandmother Pat Fitzgerald who said, "awful, and the kids. I'm a grandmother and I could never deal with that. But they're resilient people, they've been through it before, they'll get through it again."
