Ceiling collapses at Pawtucket elementary school

Posted: Updated:

Pawtucket school officials said Potter Burns Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week, after a 6-foot-by-10-foot section of the basement ceiling collapsed Wednesday.

No one was in the room at the time of the collapse.

"Someone could have been hurt had they been in the room," said school superintendent Deborah Cylke.

The school was built in 1941 and Cylke said the building is regularly inspected.

Structural engineers were inspecting the building before classes resumes Tuesday, unless they said it's too dangerous to go back inside.

"Naturally our concern is, does that condition exist in any other places in the building?" Cylke said.

Parents were called to tell them the school was closed on Thursday.

"I didn't know. I just found out when I got here," said parent Thiagl Rangel.
