Report: DLT lawyer wants Derderians to pay fine

Posted: Updated:

A lawyer for the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training is urging the state Supreme Court not to review a $1.07 million penalty against the owners of The Station nightclub, the Providence Journal reported.

The penalty was assessed against brothers Michael Derderian and Jeffrey Derderian. They didn't have workers' compensation insurance for their employees when the nightclub burned down in 2003, killing 100 and injuring hundreds of others.

DLT lawyer Bernard Healy said in a court filing that it's time for the brothers to pay. He said they benefited by a lengthy delay in finalizing the penalty because interest hasn't been accruing.

A lawyer for the Derderians said a reply to the DLT's objection would be filed by May 20.
