Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a weekend assault that left a Brown University basketball player in the hospital with severe head injuries.

Police in Vernon, Conn., arrested 25-year-old Tory Lussier at his house Wednesday on a felony arrest warrant. He's being held at the Vernon Police Department as a fugitive from justice and is awaiting extradition to Rhode Island.

Lussier is due to appear in court in Connecticut on Thursday.

A spokesman for Rhode Island Hospital said Wednesday that 21-year-old Joseph Sharkey remains in critical condition. Sharkey, who is a sophomore guard, is from Norwood, Mass.

NBC 10 spoke with Toby Lussier, Tory's father on Wednesday night.

"He's a good kid. It sucks that something happened here. I don't really know what. Obviously I wasn't there and I understand I'm his father and I'm biased and I wish Providence knew who he was and reached out to him to get his version before this happened," Toby Lussier said.

Providence police told NBC 10 that Sharkey was with a group near the corner of Thayer and George Streets on the east side early Sunday morning when he was sucker punched.

"That's not what I'm being told," Toby Lussier said. "My son does not have a history of lying to me."

Police said there was some sort of fight between the two groups just minutes before Sharkey was punched. Sharkey was with one group, and the suspect with the other.

Lussier's father said his son was visiting Providence to see a Marine friend.

"He was in his car headed home when he saw his Marine buddies being assaulting on the sidewalk. He didn't know why, but his first instinct was to jump out and break it up," Toby Lussier said.

This is not Lussier's first brush with the law.

Police in Vernon said he was charged in a road rage assault last year in which a man was knocked out. Police said the case is still pending.
