Police: Robbery suspect claimed he had a bomb

Posted: Updated:

A Fall River man is accused robbing a gas station by claiming he had a bomb.

Robert Chase, 50, was charged with armed robbery, making a false bomb threat and disturbing the peace.

Police said Chase went to the Hess station at 614 Pleasant St. at about 5:17 p.m. Monday, told a clerk he had a bomb and demanded money.  Chase was ordered held on $12,500 cash bail at his arraignment Tuesday.

Police said Chase left a suspicious package, walked out with an undisclosed amount of money and got into a taxi. Officers arrested him at his home, where they seized evidence.

The state police bomb squad responded to the gas station and determined that the package was not a threat.

The gas station is less than a block from the police station.
