Fire district will remain in operation

Posted: Updated:

A bill allowing the financially troubled Central Coventry Fire District to collect taxes will go into effect Friday.

The district has been in receivership, a form of bankruptcy since the fall.

The bill has the full support of the legislature but not the governor.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee elected not to sign the bill passed by both the House and Senate in Rhode Island. If the governor does not take action on a bill within six days it automatically becomes law.

So despite rejecting budget after budget at the local level, people in Coventry will continue to pay increased taxes at least until Sept. 1 to keep the district operating.
