De Ramel announces rerun for RI secretary of state

Posted: Updated:

Former secretary of state candidate Guillaume de Ramel is running again for the job in 2014.

The Newport Democrat announced his run on Thursday. De Ramel failed in his 2006 bid, losing to Ralph Mollis in the primary. He has been largely absent from the political world since.

Mollis won two terms but can't run again due to term limits. Former Democratic Party Chairman Ed Pacheco has said he's also running for secretary of state.

De Ramel is a member of the Prince family, which once owned Newport's Marble House mansion and which donated $15 million to Rhode Island Hospital in 2010.

If he wins office, he says he wants to improve transparency, accountability and technology as well as his office's relationship with the business community.
