Police say a 19-year-old man has been shot to death in Providence, a month after his 20-year-old cousin was also fatally shot.
Police said that officers responded to a shooting on Harvard Avenue at about 8:20 p.m.
They found 19-year-old Demitri Todd, of Providence, about 30 feet away from a Toyota Camry that had crashed into a pole. He was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police said he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 10 p.m.
Cmdr. Thomas Oates says police believe Todd was driving the car and shot when he came to a stop. The investigation is ongoing.
Kenneth Forham, Demitri's father, tempered his anger by remembering his last moment's with Todd two days ago.
"Every time I seen my son, I told him I love him, except for the last time. You know, we didn't even speak. He just came into the bathroom. I was in the bathroom, and then he left. And that was the end of it," he told NBC 10.
Family members lovingly called Todd, "Meat" or "Big Meat" because of his build.
"He was 6-foot-2, or 6-foot-3, tall, big. He was just a gentle giant," said Keith Fordham, Todd's uncle.
Family members said Todd was a good kid, a Davies Career Technical school graduate with plans of studying accounting in college.
Oates says Todd was a cousin of Wesley Smith, who was shot to death in the city on March 27. Oates says there's no indication at this time that the killings are related.
Todd is the city's third homicide victim of the year.
