A rescued seal pup that has taken up permanent residence at the Mystic Aquarium has a new name, the aquarium said Tuesday.
The aquarium said more than 8,000 votes were cast in a naming contest that ran earlier this month. The winner was Coral.
The other choices were Grace, Hope, Madison and Mystic – all names of harbors.
The seal, previously known as Pup 49, was rescued in Plymouth, Mass., in July. Veterinarians had to amputate her left flipper because of a life-threatening infection.
The federal government said she couldn't be released and granted permission to Mystic Aquarium to care for her permanently. She has a special ramp that allows her to get out of the water.
Coral will be on view at the aquarium through Sunday, when she'll begin private training. Guests can expect to see her again in the fall.
