Friends, family of missing Brown student plea for help

PROVIDENCE -

The family of a Brown University student reported missing 37 days ago has launched a new effort to track him down.

Sunil Tripathi was last seen March 16. On Tuesday, his family launched a campaign called "Lend a Hand." They're hoping it raises both awareness and the profile of the search nationwide.

Students, friends and family members gathered at the Brown student center Tuesday to write messages on their hands to Tripathi.

Last week, several media outlets falsely identified Tripathi as a suspect in the Boston marathon bombings.

Tripathi's mother told NBC 10 she had to take down the Facebook page they created to help find their son because there were so many negative comments.

The family is hoping to the same media outlets that spread bad news to spread their latest campaign effort.

His family pleaded with him on camera Tuesday to return home. They said they were waiting for his call, and just want to know he is safe.
