Feds reveal details of UMass student investigation

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -

With the manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev over, some details are now being filled in, including what was found at The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where the bombing suspect was a student and where federal agents swarmed Friday.

In Tsarnaev's dorm room, the FBI said it found what it called a large pyrotechnic and a white hat and black jacket fitting the description of those worn by bombing suspect No. 2 in the video from the marathon.

"He seemed like a normal kid, but now it's pretty scary, what he had in his room. If he made a mistake, a lot of lives could have been lost," said Derek Julzaitis, who lives in the same dormitory.

"I met him, had regular conversations with him, never would have suspected it," said Santo Dell'Aquila.

Dell'Aquila said he had been in Tsarnaev's room before and saw him on campus Wednesday, two days after the bombing in Boston.

"Every time I turn on the news, it's his picture. And I've been face to face with him, shook his hand," Dell'Aquila said.

On the UMass Dartmouth campus Monday evening, students held a vigil to remember the victims who were killed or maimed, allegedly at the hands of a fellow student.

In New Bedford, the dust is settling at the Hidden Brook complex after three people were taken into custody Friday.

Those people were released, but a neighbor told NBC 10 that two of them were taken away by immigration officials not long after returning to their apartment.

"They're very nice boys, some of the nicest I've ever met. They've been very good to me," said the neighbor, who did not want to be identified.

The neighbor said she heard the two young men were friends with Tsarnaev and that he may have stayed with them a couple nights last week.
