RI road races will go ahead as planned

Posted: Updated:

The organizer of two of Rhode Island's biggest road races said Thursday they will go ahead as planned following the explosions at the Boston Marathon.

Charles Breagy oversees the Navigant Credit Union Running Festival Half Marathon and 5K in Pawtucket and the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K in Providence.

Breagy said there will be increased security, but the spirit of the races will stay intact.

Breagy said his daughter was in Boston for Monday's marathon.

"It could have been a football game, a soccer game. It could have been at a church. This country can't shut down. We got to go on with our lives and we got to continue with the things that we love to do," he said.

Breagy coaches runners at North Kingstown High School. He urges runners to keep going when it's tough and he brings the same passion to the races he oversees.

"I don't foresee any of these lunatics, as I call them, putting a stop to our way of life," he said.

The Pawtucket road race will be held May 5.

"I've reached out to some of the local police that are involved already. But before the event, we'll sit down I'm sure and go over any new details. Additional expenses will be tough, but if they are required they will have to be followed," Breagy said.

Breagy said it's too early to know if or how much extra security measures cost, but said organizers and spectators will have to be more vigilant.

"I don't think there's any harm in us runners and people going to sporting events to be more observant and watch out for things that don't look right. If you see something suspicious, say something," he said.

Breagy said they plan to pay tribute to those killed or injured at the Boston Marathon. He said he's also researching ways to donate to The One Fund, a collection to help the victims of the marathon bombings.
