Authorities: If you see something, say something

PROVIDENCE -

Local authorities are asking the public to be vigilant and to be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Officials checked on three suspicious packages Wednesday morning outside of the National Guard headquarters and Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency offices in Cranston.

Law enforcement is taking no chances and is investigating anything that can be considered suspicious.

"Any type of package -- a box, backpacks, suitcases, briefcases," said Cmdr. Thomas Oates of the Providence Police Department.

Bomb squads used a water cannon Tuesday night to destroy a knapsack left unattended in Providence.

"It looks quite frankly like a large soda bottle full of water with an explosive charge in it, in a controlled environment and we use that on backpacks," said state fire marshal John Chartier.

Chartier said people should take nothing for granted and that if you see anything suspicious -- a parcel or even a person's behavior -- that you report it to authorities.

"We're asking the public to be extra vigilant and to be on the lookout for anything that they see that's out of the ordinary. If it doesn't look right to them, contact somebody," Chartier said.

The fire marshal said at least six packages have been found around the area and deemed "suspicious" since the Boston bombings. Authorities don't want to halt the normal hustle and bustle of a busy city like Providence, but they do ask that everyone be aware that this is a volatile time.

"We just ask people to be conscious to the fact that just leaving a package somewhere unattended and not telling anyone else about it or not putting it in a secure place, it could really cause law enforcement to have to respond to a situation that they really don't need to be responding to," Oates said.

Authorities said they cannot reiterate it enough: If you see anything suspicious, it is important to report it immediately and, most importantly, stay away from it.
