One of the victims injured in the explosions at the Boston Marathon has been identified as 38-year-old Heather Abbott of Newport, according to the Newport Buzz.

Abbott was watching the marathon with a group of friends from the Newport area cheering on runners when the blasts occurred.

According to the Newport Buzz, she sustained severe injuries to her lower legs and was in surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Abbott is a graduate of Stonehill College and received an MBA from Providence College, the Newport Buzz reported.

Abbott grew up in Lincoln where her parents still live.

Linda Ogle's children went to school with Abbott at Lincoln High School.

"Very nice neighbors, whole family is great. Can't believe this is happening in our world, our neighborhood. Just distraught over it," she said.

Neighbor Gabriella DaRosa said the thought of such a family, fun event with such a storied tradition can turn tragic so quickly is chilling.

"It's awful that people find ways to make a good thing, that's very family oriented, for people to just have fun. They make it so you'll never forget that moment," she said.

DaRosa said her thoughts and prayers are with them and hope she recovers quickly.
