SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -

A Woonsocket firefighter accused of drunken driving pleaded not guilty Thursday in Washington County Court.

Sean Newton was released on personal recognizance.

Witnesses told police that Newton was driving erratically along Route 1 in South Kingstown on March 16, hit a guardrail and kept driving.

Police said they received numerous 911 calls about the erratic driving and officers eventually found Newton in a South Kingstown parking lot. His car was damaged.

Police said Newton was in his fire department uniform.

According to a police report, Newton told officers he had been texting on his way into work for a hazardous-materials situation.

Police said Newton appeared unsteady on his feet and they could detect the smell of alcohol on his breath.

Police said Newton refused a chemical breath test and sobriety tests.

Woonsocket fire officials told NBC 10 they haven't taken disciplinary actions against Newton.
