Local officers honored for outstanding work

Posted: Updated:

Local officers were honored Wednesday for important work in their communities in the past year.

The American Legion recognized the officers.

East Providence Sgt. Diogo Mello was honored for capturing the "Bearded Bandit" bank robber.

And there were cheers for a state police detective who worked on the corruption case involving Central Falls' former mayor.

"I engaged in a foot pursuit across the street onto Atwood Avenue. I located the suspect hiding out. Did you have to wrestle him? No, I just took him down at gunpoint. I'm pretty blessed he just had given up the way he did," said Patrolman Jared DeAngelis of the Johnston police force.

Officers from Providence, Barrington and Woonsocket were recognized, too.
