RI Senate committee approves father-daughter dance bill

Posted: Updated:

A Rhode Island Senate committee approved a bill Wednesday that would allow father-daughter dances to resume.

There was only one vote against the bill in the Senate Education Committee.

Many Cranston parents were outraged when the superintendent canceled father-daughter dances and mother-son baseball games in the district last year.

The cancellations were a response to a single mother's complaint, brought by the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, that her daughter couldn't attend a father-daughter dance at Stadium Elementary School.

The RIACLU argued that those types of events violated anti-discrimination laws in Rhode Island.

The legislation would add language to an existing law saying schools can offer activities to one gender as long as similar activities are offered to students of the other gender.

The RIACLU argued that mother-son baseball games and father-daughter dances were not "reasonably similar" enough.
