Convicted murderer gets 2 life terms plus 40 years

Posted: Updated:

Rhode Island's attorney general says a man previously convicted of killing his girlfriend who was later found guilty of killing another man has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years.

Peter Kilmartin says 24-year-old Victor Arciliares was sentenced in Superior Court on Friday for the 2010 murder of Alfredo Barros.

Prosecutors say Barros and Arciliares argued outside a Providence gas station, and Barros was shot as he sat in a vehicle at a red light in Pawtucket. Arciliares also shot at other passengers, but they weren't seriously injured.

Arciliares had previously been sentenced to life plus 45 years for the 2009 murder of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Dayvellis Cotto. The judge on Friday ordered that the new life sentences run consecutive to that one.
