RISPCA investigates new complaints about Scituate farmer

SCITUATE, R.I. -

Animal cruelty investigators looked into new complaints against a Scituate farm owner. Neighbors said they're worried about his pot-bellied pig.

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals checked on the pig Friday after Kathy Larante and another animal lover sent complaints to the RISPCA about how she is treated.

"I was here the day she came in. It was a gentleman that brought her in. I guess he could no longer take care of her and thought she'd be good here, but she's just going downhill since she's been here," Larante said.

The pig is owned by Dan McKenzie of Bonniedale Farm Animal Sanctuary. McKenzie is already facing animal neglect charges for the condition of a horse.

Dr. E.J. Finocchio, president of the RISPCA, said the pig has lost weight since he last checked her in November.

"Yes, she's a pig, but I mean, you know, this is a pot-bellied pig. Their natural habitat is not frigid weather like this. She should be inside protected," Finocchio said.

Finocchio said he thinks the pig's living quarters are subpar. Larante said the pig's water is usually frozen and that she's not getting enough to eat.

Larante said McKenzie is supposed to run an animal rescue, but she said she believes his animals need rescuing from him.

"I love the animals," she said. "It's heartbreaking. It's really heartbreaking."

Although he believes the pig is underweight, Finocchio said it's not enough for him to act.

"I probably have to wait until something drastically happens before action is taken," Finocchio said.

The RISPCA said it will continue to check on the animal if it continues to receive complaints.
