Seal gets by with disability

Posted: Updated:

A young harbor seal pup is rehabbing at Mystic Aquarium. But this is not just your average harbor seal.

This one had a flipper amputated and has been recovering since last July.

The female pup known as "Pup 49" was admitted to Mystic's Seal Rescue Clinic after being rescued by New England Aquarium.

A life-threatening infection developed in her left rear flipper, so doctors removed it through successful surgery.

Because she is weaker and not such a great swimmer, "Pup 49" was deemed non-releasable by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Mystic Aquarium has submitted a letter of intent to acquire the seal and if approved, she will be taken off display and begin training.
