Woman assaulted by intruder in home

WARWICK, R.I. -

A woman was assaulted by an intruder in her Warwick home Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were trying to figure out exactly what happened.

A relative said the woman was attacked at about 4:30 p.m. in her New London Avenue home. The woman's husband tackled the intruder as he tried to run away.

Police identified the assailant as 28-year-old Derek Benjamin.

Warwick police are charging him with one count of felony assault, one count of felony breaking and entering and one count of simple assault.

Benjamin could face more charges from West Warwick police he is expected to be arraigned at Kent County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Benjamin and the woman, whose name was not immediately available, were being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.  Police said neither had life-threatening injuries.

The woman's husband had no comment for NBC 10.
