Police say New Bedford woman was stabbed to death

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -

New Bedford police said Thursday that a 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death in her home.

Neighbors said they heard a blood-curdling scream come from inside 68 North St. Wednesday afternoon.

"I got out of work and there was a lot of commotion. All the cops were outside," said Ivan Santiago, a neighbor.

Police were at the scene minutes after 35-year-old Tiffany Ann Durfee's mother ran out screaming that her daughter was dead. The road remained blocked one day later.

Neighbors are shell-shocked.

"Sad, sad. I'm kind of shocked, still," Santiago said.

Santiago said he barely knew Durfee. He said his only interaction with her was that she went out of her way to help him shovel his driveway this winter.

"So as far as I had met her, she helped me shovel. I helped her shovel. She seemed like a nice person. She had three kids, I think," Santiago said.

Neighbors said two of Durfee's sons were inside the home when she was killed.

The father of Durfee's two sons said the boys were her life.

Neighbors said they're particularly shocked by the killing because it isn't the kind of place where crime is common. They said everybody knew each other in the neighborhood. Durfee was new to the area.

"I can't say it's a bad neighborhood because this is one incident. So, I can't blame it on the neighborhood," Santiago said.

The medical examiner's office removed Durfee's body from her home late Wednesday night.

Police said they have no suspects in the killing.
