NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -

A New Bedford man was ordered held without bail on Monday after being accused of killing his girlfriend.

Pedro DeSousa was arraigned from his bed at St. Luke's Hospital. Prosecutors said DeSousa injured his back while trying to escape from police.

Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Brackett said 33-year-old Rebecca Felteau was pronounced dead Sunday morning. Brackett said the woman suffered injuries to her head and the victim's throat was slashed with a box cutter.

Police responded to DeSousa's home on Ashland Place at about 6 a.m. to help with a domestic disturbance.

"The defendant's brother told the police that during the fight or the altercation he could hear the victim yelling to the effect of, 'Help me. He's trying to kill me,'" Brackett said.

When officers arrived, DeSousa had barricaded himself and Felteau in his second-floor bedroom.

"The defendant was residing there with a number of family members. When the police arrived, they found the defendant locked inside of a second-floor bedroom. He wouldn't allow family or police into his room," Brackett said.

When officers entered the apartment, they found Felteau on the floor covered in blood and DeSousa jumped out of the window.

Police said DeSousa was later found hiding underneath a car a few blocks from his home. He injured his back while trying to escape and was taken to the hospital.

DeSousa will be transferred to jail when he leaves the hospital.
