Council leads big turnaround for Friars

PROVIDENCE -

What a difference a month makes.

After struggling the first half of the season, the Providence College men's basketball team has turned its season around and won six of its last seven games.

And senior guard Vincent Council has played a big role.

"I think that just having everyone back healthy being able to practice together, learning each other's chemistry on and off the court. And right now is a good time to be playing well. And I think we are playing well right now," he said.

After battling through an injury to start the season, Council has stepped his game up and is now the Big East Conference's all-time assists leader.

"It's definitely special. I know being a little kid watching film on the Big East, watching (God) Shammgod, watching tapes like Ernie D., Sherman Douglas and Allen Iverson. And to be No. 1 in assists is a great honor," he said.

Before he broke the Big East record at Syracuse, he also broke the Friars' record, once held by Ernie DiGregorio.

And you may have noticed Council wearing some pink shoes recently. He said he wore them for a special someone.

"It's actually for my aunt. She had cancer, so I wore them for her. Also, a Friar fan lost a person this year from cancer, so I decided to wear the pink sneakers," he said.

The Friars will wrap their home schedule Tuesday against Seton Hall in Providence.
