Officials release name of woman killed in fire

Posted: Updated:

Pawtucket police on Monday released the name of a woman who was killed in a fire in her apartment.

Firefighters received a call at about 10 p.m. Saturday for a fire at the Northern Plaza Apartments on Main Street. The body of 57-year-old Gail DeCarlo was found in her bedroom.

The fire was contained to DeCarlo's apartment.

"When I opened the door there was a big, gigantic cloud of smoke coming through," neighbor Stephen Rogers said.

Crews asked him to evacuate his apartment for about an hour while they worked on the second floor.

Smoky windows marred with fingerprints and black marks surrounding the victim's door were the only signs of the fire. Some tenants slept through the event, like Mary Populus.

"This is just terrible, awful," Populus said when she learned of her neighbor's death Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
