Police: Woman kills grandsons, self in minivan

Two young boys were killed when their grandmother picked them up from day care and later shot them before turning the gun on herself, Connecticut State Police said Wednesday.

Police said 2-year-old Alton Perry and 6-month-old Ashton Perry were picked up by 47-year-old Debra Denison at Kidds & Co. day care in North Stonington Tuesday afternoon.

"There are no words to describe not knowing where your kids are and having them with someone that's supposed to be trustworthy," the boys' mother, Brenda Perry, told reporters Tuesday.

Police issued an Amber Alert in response to a panicked call from the boy's mother at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

"They never came home," Perry said in tears.

She was preparing their home for Alton's birthday party Sunday. He was shot on his second birthday.

"I didn't want him to be stuck at day care on his birthday. I wanted him to come home and play with his new toys," Perry said.

Debra Denison, Brenda's mother, suffers from bipolar disorder. The Perrys said she's been gentle in the past and that they trusted her around the kids, despite her mental health history.

"We wanted to give her a second chance. Everyone deserves a second chance," Jeremy Perry, the boy's father, said.

Connecticut State Police responded to a 911 call at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The caller told police three people could be found in a van near Lake of the Isle in Preston. EMS personnel confirmed them dead at the scene.

Police said Denison left a suicide note before grabbing a handgun and picking up the two boys.

Connecticut's chief medical examiner will do an autopsy to make an official determination on the cause of death. Results are expected Thursday morning.
