Classical's Maddy Berkson was the star of this year's indoor state track championships, as she became the first Rhode Island female runner to win the 3,000, 1,500 and 1,000 meter races.
"It felt great to be the first one to do that. It was pretty tough doing that obviously, but I think my training had really set me up to handle that for the meet," she said.
And to show that Berkson puts team first, she missed the prestigious Millrose Games, an elite runners event in New York, so she could help her team win a state title.
"I decided to forgo the Millrose mile because I like the state meet and I really wanted to be there for the team to try to get the state title," said Berkson, a junior.
"It was a great message to young people that even though you may be at the top of your game as an individual, it's more important to put things together as a team. And we certainly saw that at the track meet where Maddy and the other teammates put everything together and sacrificed for the benefit of Classical track," said Mike Green, assistant track coach.
Next up for Berkson is the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships.
