Raimondo, Taveras signal they're running for governor

This week, Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo announced she hired as chief of staff the man who ran Myrth York's last gubernatorial campaign, Andrew Roos.

It's not hard to conclude she's readying her own run for governor.

NBC 10 political analyst Wendy Schiller said the treasurer and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras have been pretty open about looking forward to a campaign next year.

"We're seeing a lot of signals coming out of both and Taveras's and Raimondo's offices that they're gearing up to run," Schiller said.

Schiller said she thinks Gov. Lincoln Chafee will run as an independent, but try to raise money from Democrats.

"He's trying to tell Democrats he's one of them and that they shouldn't split their votes among a three-way race, (that) they should go with him, he's got the experience," Schiller said.

Schiller said she thinks Republicans should spend their energies on rebuilding the party rather than trying to win the governorship. But the Democratic primary she anticipates, which includes the only declared candidate, Ernest Almonte, will be a help to Chafee.

"Once they formally decide and they announce, I would expect some radio ads, certainly a tremendous amount of community visibility. Look for both of these people, and Almonte, to be out and about come spring, come summer, come fall, and really trying to scare somebody into not running in the primary," Schiller said.

The staffing has begun. Pollsters are being contacted. And the sport of watching politicians jockeying for position on the hot topics of the day is just getting into full swing.
