(Coast Guard)
The Coast Guard early Thursday morning assisted five people on a New Bedford-based fishing boat that was sinking 100 miles from Nantucket.
The Coast Guard said it received a distress call from the 80-foot Megan-Marie on Wednesday night. The crew said the boat was taking on water and that pumps were not keeping up with the flooding.
The flooding came from a hole under the engine block. The Coast Guard sent a helicopter, two planes and two cutters to assist. Three dewatering pumps were dropped to the crew.
The cutters were escorting the Megan-Marie back to New Bedford. The crew stayed on board.
