WJAR retransmission contract with Cox Communications to expire

Posted:
By Nbc 10 News Release

WJAR / NBC 10, a Media General NBC affiliate, on Monday announced that its current retransmission consent contract with Cox Communications expires on May 31, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. (EDT) and at this time it appears unlikely that a new agreement will be reached.

If a new retransmission consent contract is not reached by 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on May 31, by law, Cox Communications cannot carry WJAR / NBC channels 10 (located on channel 10 on Cox), 10.1 in HD (located on channel 1010 on Cox) or Me-TV 10.2 (channel 810 on Cox). In addition, WJAR / NBC 10 newscasts will be suspended on Ocean State Networks channels 5 and 1005 on Cox.

"Our highly-rated television station is an important asset to our local community and it is unfortunate that Cox Communications does not recognize our fair market value," said Vic Vetters, WJAR General Manager. "We look forward to continuing negotiations with Cox Communications to reach a deal before our contract expires. In the event that our station is no longer carried by Cox, viewers may continue to watch their local news, lifestyle and sports programs, as well as top-rated prime time and syndicated programming, over-the-air via antenna or by switching to an alternative pay-TV service provider."

If a deal is not reached, Cox Communications customers in the Rhode Island market will lose the ability to watch NBC 10 local news, "Today", NBC prime programming, the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, the 2012 Olympics in London and many other shows through their Cox connection.
