I-Team: Charges to be dropped against Carnevale

By Nbc 10 News

A spokeswoman for the Rhode Island attorney general said Thursday that the state will seek to dismiss a three-count indictment against a state lawmaker accused of sexual assault.

The accuser in the case died Jan. 1.

Prosecutors said state Rep. John Carnevale, D-Providence/Johnston, sexually assaulted the woman in her home in July.

Carnevale, 50, pleaded not guilty in November to charges including first- and second-degree sexual assault, and one count of assault with intent to commit sexual assault.

The attorney general said the state cannot proceed with the case without the woman's testimony.

Carnevale told the Associated Press that he did not commit a crime and that the allegations against him are false.
