The Johnston building inspector will advise the town Monday on whether it's safe to comply with a cease-and-desist order at the site of FM Global’s new headquarters.

If that's implemented, construction would have to come to a stop.

Prefco, the owner of the building that presently houses FM Global, is challenging the insurance giant's construction of a new headquarters across the street.

Last week, Prefco made a cease-and-desist demand on the town to halt construction, amid fears that being left with an empty building and concerns about flooding and traffic might make finding a new tenant impossible.

Prefco claims the town of Johnston allowed construction to begin, before the company could voice its concerns.

"We think we're doing it by the numbers. We are not cutting corners," said town solicitor William Conley.

But a lawyer for Prefco said he wants construction of the new headquarters to stop immediately and the site restored to the same condition prior to the issuance of the building permit.

FM Global admitted it went ahead with construction before an appeal could be heard. The company promised to pay any legal claims against the town if necessary.
