PROVIDENCE – You might want to think twice about running a red light in Rhode Island if legislation clears any further hurdles in the General Assembly. The House passed the bill that would allow the installation of cameras around the state to photograph drivers who run lights.

A law that permitted cameras first passed in 2005, but Providence is currently the only municipality to use them, and the sunset provision from that legislation expires in July. The House vote would lift the sunset clause and approve cameras permanently.

The American Civil Liberties Union opposes the bill, which now moves onto the Senate.
