PROVIDENCE - Two Johnson & Wales students were stabbed early Friday morning after a fight inside a Providence nightclub.

Police said Matthew Middleton, 21, of New York, was stabbed on the left side of his stomach. He's still in the hospital and listed in good condition.

Leonid Griwberg, 21, of New York, was stabbed in the chest. He was treated and released.

According to a police report, officers spotted a large group fighting at the corner of Pine and Eddy streets. The group broke up as officers approached, but the two students told police that they had been stabbed.

The victims told police that their group and the other group involved in the fight had both been inside Club Hell and that the other group had been kicked out for starting a fight inside the club.

The melee was behind a Johnson & Wales dormitory, but not on campus.

University officials told NBC 10 they've have reached out to the victims and regularly tell their students to have common sense in the city.

"I think we do a very thorough job, particularly with our orientation program, and with our security officers throughout the year, really sensitizing students to the environment that they are living in to be cautious of the fact that students are living in a metropolitan area," said Dr. Ron Martel of Johnson & Wales University.

The victims described their assailant to police as a 6-foot-5-inch man who was wearing a red polo shirt.
