R.I. school peanut law amended
Rhode Island schools will have a little more flexibility when it comes to peanuts.
The peanut law has been amended to give schools more discretion when they don't have students with severe allergies.
"We're only loosening it for the schools that have children that have mild allergies. We are not loosening this law for students who are severely allergic. In fact, we will give them additional protection," said Rep. Lisa Baldelli Hunt, the bill's original sponsor.
Peanut-free tables will exist at many schools, but will have more flexibility.
After hearing feedback from parents, schools and students, Hunt wanted to modify the original law.
The law included posting signs around the school if there were any children with peanut allergies, designating peanut-free classrooms and peanut-free tables in the cafeteria.
