Amherst, MA -- A robotic version of Bullwinkle’s best friend may soon help researchers uncover the real lives of squirrels. Scientists at Hampshire College developed a robo-squirrel named Rocky they hope to use to infiltrate a live squirrel clique. They are hoping to learn about squirrel communication, social interaction and survival techniques.

Rocky can bark and move his tail, which will help scientists figure out what different sounds and motions mean to his fellow squirrels. Other robotic animals are being used worldwide for animal research, including lizards and cockroaches.

So far, there are no plans to include a robo-Boris Badenov into the mix.
