NBC 10 Chief Meteorologist Gary Ley appears weekdays on NBC 10 News at noon, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Gary joined the NBC 10 team in 1984. Prior to that he was one of the original members of the Weather Channel when it began operations in 1982. From 1980-1982, Gary was a forecast specialist at the National Weather Service's National Meteorological Center in Washington, D.C.
Gary has been a member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) since 1969. He has twice served a three-year term on the AMS Board of Broadcast Meteorology. This group certifies on-air presentations of television and radio meteorologists from around the country. In 1989, Gary was co-chairman of the National Conference of Broadcast Meteorology in Miami.
Gary was a meteorologist on active duty in the Navy for 10 years and spent 10 years in the Reserves, and is now a retired commander. He also holds the Navy Achievement Medal.
Gary graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in meteorology and holds a master's degree in meteorology from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Gary was voted "Best Rhode Island Meteorologist" by Rhode Island Monthly magazine for four consecutive years.
He enjoys all sports, especially football and golf, and says he loves working in the yard.
"It's mentally relaxing to pull weeds, especially after a nice soaking rain," he says.
