BOSTON -- Rising fuel prices will make it more expensive to take a ferry to the islands this summer.

The Steamship Authority, the agency that runs ferry service to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, has announced increases ranging from 50 cents to $2 on one-way fares, effective May 1.

Rate increases for cars and light trucks will be from $2.50 to $5 one way.

Robert Davis, treasurer and comptroller for the Steamship Authority, said there is just no way around the price hike. He said fuel this year will cost at least $1.5 million more than budgeted.

Hy-Line Cruises, the authority's private competitor, has already added a $2 one-way fuel surcharge.

Tourism officials said higher ferry prices may discourage daytrippers.
