PROVIDENCE, R.I.—U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is finishing his first trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan for briefings from foreign officials and military leaders.
The state’s junior senator spent the weekend visiting the two countries with a congressional delegation led by U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, Whitehouse’s spokeswoman Alex Swartsel said Tuesday.
Whitehouse said in a statement that as the U.S. prepares for a new administration in January, he wanted to hear directly from American military leaders in Afghanistan and Pakistan and from government officials in those countries about how to shore up security there.
That included three days of travel to four sites in Afghanistan and to Islamabad, Pakistan, and meetings with more than a dozen military leaders and government officials, including Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gilani.
As a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Whitehouse went to Iraq last year, Swartsel said.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, Rhode Island’s senior senator, is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and spent six days in Iraq earlier this year with now President-elect Barack Obama.
Whitehouse is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C., Wednesday.
