PROVIDENCE—A Coventry woman has pleaded guilty to mail fraud for her role in the counterfeiting and distribution of about $1.6 million worth of phony checks.
Nancy Alexander was released on bond after entering her plea on Wednesday pending sentencing scheduled for April 3. She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Federal prosecutors say Alexander, 66, made 291 counterfeit checks on her home computer and shipped them to potential victims across the U.S. in the hopes that the recipients would wire back money.
Authorities found out about the scheme in April when they intercepted a parcel for Alexander that contained 119 counterfeit checks and money orders that originated in Nigeria.
