LINCOLN, R.I. - Rhode Island’s fire marshal says a blaze at a Lincoln home last month that claimed the life of a 7-year-old boy was caused by a plug-in Christmas decoration.
Fire Marshal Jack Chartier says the fire was an accident that started at the base of the staircase.
Saylesville Fire District Chief David Almond said the state’s findings were consistent with his department’s own investigation. Almond says officials are still trying to determine whether the house’s smoke detectors were working, but that it might be impossible because of destruction.
The Dec. 21 blaze claimed the life of Nasir Dickerson of Central Falls, who was visiting the house with his grandfather. Eight other people escaped.
