MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - A 26-year-old Middletown man is accused of stepping on and kicking his 8-month-old son.
Brandon Holley was arraigned Monday in Newport District Court on charges of first- and second-degree child abuse. Holley was released on bail, but a judge ordered him to have no contact with the child and to have a mental health evaluation.
Police said Holley was left alone with the child on Thanksgiving morning. The mother said she noticed bruising on the child’s face when she came home.
The family later traveled to New Hampshire, where relatives urged the baby be taken to a hospital.
The baby was transfered to Boston Children’s Hospital. Officials said Holley initally gave conflicting statements about the baby’s injuries.
During an interview, police said Holley admitted that he “forcefully” stepped on the baby’s back, kicked him and repeatedly struck him in the face.
