NEW BEDFORD, Mass.—A New Bedford man was arrested Thursday for failing to register as a sex offender.

Police said 47-year-old Karlheinz Harding was charged after police made a status check at his house.

Two weeks ago, Harding became the first person to be charged under the city’s new ordinance which bans child sex offenders from being in public places where children are present.

Harding was issued a $150 fine after police found him in the library.

The new ordinance was enacted five months ago after Corey Saunders, a sex offender allegedly raped a 6-year-old boy in a library.
