EAST GRANBY, Conn.—Fire officials in Connecticut are investigating an explosion that has destroyed a house in East Granby.

The explosion occurred just before 7 p.m. Thursday night, leveling the home and leaving nothing standing but the chimney.

Fire officials said the homeowners and a contractor were in the basement when the house blew up and caught fire. The three people were taken to a hospital for treatment of second- and third-degree burns.

John Cappiello, a spokesman at Bridgeport Hospital, said two men and a woman were admitted. He said one man and the woman are in critical condition and the other man is in stable condition.

Their names and ages were not available.

Fire officials are trying to determine what sparked the explosion.
