MIDDLETOWN, R.I.—The Middletown Police Department is mourning the sudden and unexpected death of a young officer.

Chief Anthony Pesare told The Newport Daily News that the entire force is “stunned” by the death of 28-year-old decorated Officer Thomas Cabral.

The three-year veteran died Sunday while at his girlfriend’s home in Newport.

Newport police say Cabral first complained about having trouble breathing. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say the death is not considered suspicious.

Cabral was a third-generation officer whose father and grandfather both worked for the Fall River, Mass. police department.
