Fun times on tap this weekend

It is expected to be a nice weekend in Southern New England and there are a number of fun and interesting events happening in the area.
On Saturday, the town of Warren is hosting the 15th annual Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Championship, featuring pumpkins that will weigh more than 1000 pounds. The event starts at 10 a.m., with the weigh off happening at 1 p.m. at Frerichs Farm in Warren.
As part of the Providence FirstWorks Festival, children’s singer Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, is appearing at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The FirstWorks Festival will be bringing a variety of shows to Providence through November 9.
Autumnfest will be happening in Woonsocket from Saturday through Monday at the World War II Veterans Memorial State Park. The 30th annual fall festival will feature a performance of the Jan & Dean Show, featuring Dean Torrence on Saturday night. There are fireworks planned for Sunday night and parade on Monday morning.
Mystic Aquarium will be featuring a hands-on exhibit, where kids can dig for hundreds of authentic sea fossils. The exhibit is called Dig It! Prehistoric Creatures of the Sea.
Children are equipped with safety goggles, a pocketed apron and digging tools and led to the “Jurassic sand quarry,” where they can search for 14 different types of specimens hidden in sand from Utah’s deserts.
