PROVIDENCE—The Arcade has closed its doors, and it’s unclear when it will open again.
The Providence Journal reported that the owners want to covert the building from a mall into the home for a single retailer or company.
But an official with the company that owns the Arcade said a planned $8 million renovation has been delayed because of the bad economy. The work won’t be done until a new tenant is found.
Built in 1828, the Arcade is considered the nation’s oldest indoor shopping mall. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
